Steam is a genuinely great platform for free games overall, with hundreds to choose from across basically any genre that you might be able to think of.
For whatever reason there is something about massively mundane activities that seems to fascinate the gaming community at large. Simulators are often a good example of this, whether you're power washing away or tending to your realistic industrial scale farm.
The other side of that same coin is more fantastical options, Those draw on real life experiences before adding a video game appropriate twist to proceedings. Administer Bands of Fantasy Adventurers
Ye Guild Clerk! puts players in the shoes of the titular guild administrator, as you work through the game's story, in what essentially serves as an interactive work of fiction. You'll be playing one of the most important roles in any fledgling fantasy kingdom, handing out quests, loot and equipment to bands of hardy adventurers.

It's a remarkably clever premise and one that will allow you to explore the game story as the developer intended simply by talking to the adventurers who come to you. The very cool thing about this feature is that their stories aren't locked-in, and they're instead affected by the quests, items and gold you give them.
It's a great way to tie your characters decisions to the wider game, and you'll learn about the personal lives of those you meet, so you might be quite sad when some of them inevitably end up dead. The guild is a community after all, so expect to be a part of that when you play.
The ends of each day come with summaries of what happened and what's going to come next, almost told in a style similar to Dungeons & Dragons.
For obvious reasons don't expect intense mechanics or fast-paced gameplay, but if you're into story beats and working through a narrative slowly, then this could definitely be the game for you.
