GSC Game World’s S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2: Heart of Chornobyl has understandably already experienced a number of delays. The Ukrainian developers halted production on the title back in March following Russia’s invasion of the country. During June’s Xbox and Bethesda showcase, GSC Game World debuted a brand new trailer, confirming that production had shifted from Kyiv to Prague. It looks as if the game is to experience further delays though.

As reported by XGP, Xbox have begun cancelling S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2 pre-orders. Those who have already placed an order received a message from Xbox informing them that the game would release at an “unconfirmed date in the future,” prompting a flurry of refunds to be sent out.

Before fans enter a state of panic, this isn’t wholly unusual for Xbox. S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2 is yet to confirm a concrete release date. As pointed out by ResetEra user ThereAreFourNaan, the game had a tentative placeholder date of December 2023 on Steam but this is just that, a placeholder.
Usually, when these kinds of placeholder dates are adjusted, all customers are automatically refunded. ResetEra user JBoogieG wrote, “This is standard procedure on Xbox. If there's pre-orders for a game and the date changes from the current one set then all pre-orders are automatically cancelled and an email is sent out to everybody affected.”
Given the ongoing war, these types of delays are totally understandable and our thoughts remain with the welfare of the developers and their families.
