Finally, it looks like Wolfenstein III is actually happening, and we can’t wait for it to be officially announced.
When it comes to important first-person shooters, Wolfenstein is right up there alongside DOOM, both making their names under the guidance of the studio, id Software, during the early '90s.
However, while Wolfenstein 3D, originally released in 1992, is arguably the most important game in the series, it initially began as a side-scrolling, action-adventure stealth game, of sorts. Largely due to the home computer limitations of its time.
The first game in the series arrived in 1981 with Castle Wolfenstein. Then the second game, Beyond Castle Wolftenstein, was released in 1984. Both of which were developed and published by the long-defunct Muse Software.
Wolfenstein 3D helped revolutionise the First-Person Genre
That being said, when Wolfenstein 3D was released as a first-person shooter, it helped shape the genre with DOOM by its side, with its influence still being felt to this very day.

Developed by MachineGames (Indiana Jones and the Great Circle) and published by Bethesda Softworks, in 2014, the series had a reboot with Wolfenstein: The New Order, followed by the spin-off, Wolfenstein: The Old Blood, in 2015.
We were then treated to its sequel, Wolfenstein II: The New Colossus, in 2017. This would be the last mainline entry in the series, and no, I’m not counting 2019’s woeful spin-off, Wolfenstein: Youngblood or the VR exclusive, Wolfenstein: Cyberpilot.
So it’s fair to say that a quality Wolfenstein entry is long overdue. Thankfully, according to a recent rumour, that agonising wait might soon be over.

As reported by Windows Central, Wolfenstein III is in the works, and its release is reportedly to coincide with Amazon Prime’s TV series.
Kotaku has also confirmed with its sources that this rumour is apparently true.
Wolfenstein: The New Order is one of my favourite games of its generation.
Playing as a more brutal B.J. Blazkowicz with a personality is so much fun. Not to mention that its first-person action is a blast, its story kept me hooked from start to finish, and it still looks great.
I can say the same for its Old Blood spin-off, as well as Wolfenstein II: The New Colossus, which also had one of the best achievements/trophies ever for kicking Adolf Hitler in the balls. Granted, his Nazi guards will kill you for doing that, but it was well worth the checkpoint restart.
Hopefully, now that the proverbial cat is out of the bag, while we should take all unconfirmed rumours with a pinch of salt until proven otherwise, Bethesda might officially announce Wolfenstein III sooner rather than later. We’ll keep you posted. Oh, and with Bethesda Softworks being owned by Microsoft, when/if Wolfenstein III is released, it will be available on Xbox Game Pass Ultimate, which will be a nice bonus.
