The Witcher season 3 part 2 ending has Henry Cavill's Geralt go down fighting

The end of an era.

Spoiler warning: this article discusses the ending of the third season of The Witcher. If you’ve not already watched it and you don’t want to be spoiled, scroll far, far away right now. Otherwise, let’s get into it.

It’s official - Henry Cavill’s time as Geralt is over. The actor’s final performance in Netflix’s The Witcher series is finally here, and from season four onwards, Geralt will instead be played by Liam Hemsworth (a casting choice that’s caused nothing but controversy since it was announced last year). Whether or not you’ve actually enjoyed season three, I hope you’ve at least been cherishing each and every frame of Cavill’s face.

Take a look at the trailer for The Witcher season three below.

So, how did it all end? Obviously, Geralt’s adventures aren’t over for good, so he didn’t go down in a blaze of glory and meet an emotional end. Equally, anyone who was hoping to see Cavill’s face morph into Hemsworth’s before our eyes is probably feeling rather disappointed.

As Distractify reports, while Ciri eventually gets out of the wasteland that she landed in at the end of season three part one (before going on to meet The Rats), Geralt is busy almost dying after his fight against Vilgefortz. Not a great time to be him. Obviously though, he recovers, and after doing so, he sets out to find Ciri. Meanwhile, Yennefer is preoccupied doing cool mage stuff (she’s their leader now, apparently), and bringing all of them together in order to prepare for the upcoming fights against Nilfgaard. Or anyone else who wants to hurt Ciri, for that matter.

And that’s it, really. Honestly, I’m a little underwhelmed. Previously, The Witcher executive producer Tomasz 'Tomek' Bagiński teased that the transition to Hemsworth will be “very lore accurate” and “very, very close to the meta ideas which are deeply embedded in the books”. Clearly, we’re yet to see what that actually means.

There’s currently no scheduled release date for The Witcher season four.
