Is The Lord of the Rings the greatest movie trilogy of all time?

There are very few movies that make an impact quite like The Lord of the Rings franchise, especially when it relates to three movies. A movie might strike gold once, perhaps twice if lucky, but to smash out a movie trilogy is truly god-tier.

Sitting alongside The Lord of the Rings as some of the greatest trilogies in cinema history are the original Star Wars and Indiana Jones movies, Christopher Nolan’s Dark Knight and Die Hard to name a few. However, some fans believe that Peter Jackon’s adaptations of the J.R.R Tolkien novels are the best cinema has to offer, and I agree.

Sure, Peter Jackson’s The Lord of the Rings trilogy isn't 100% faithful to its source material, but when we’re talking about Hollywood movies, it’s about as close as we’re going to get. Plus, it’s not like we’re talking about The Hobbit trilogy, is it? To be honest, I love The Lord of the Rings, the novels and the movies, and it’s a reason why I and my son make it a yearly tradition to watch Peter Jackson’s trilogy every Christmas.

Peter Jackon’s The Lord of the Rings trilogy began in 2001 with The Fellowship of the Ring before The Two Towers and The Return of the King arrived in 2002 and 2003 respectively. So with it being over two decades since those times, we think it’s long overdue that we get a new movie, perhaps expanding further on Tolkien’s lore. Thankfully it was revealed in February 2023 that new The Lord of the Rings movies are on the way.

Twenty years after its last release, fans on Twitter have been expressing their love for Peter Jackson’s The Lord of the Rings trilogy. “Man, I don't know if we'll ever get another trilogy that's as perfect as The Lord of The Rings,” said @StephenSeanFord. “It’s been a good day!” replied @ChadHoschka sharing images implying that all three movies have been watched in a single day.

“The Lord of the Rings is the greatest film trilogy ever made. Absolute film masterpieces,” exclaimed @bridgeyv2. “The Lord of the Rings is the greatest trilogy of all time! FIGHT ME!” said a defiant @ughkix.

If for whatever reason you’ve never watched The Lord of the Rings movie trilogy, you owe it to yourself to change that. The movie trilogy is sometimes available on Netflix, so if you subscribe to that particular streaming service, keep a lookout. Though to be fair, you can easily pick up physical copies of the movies rather cheap nowadays. Oh and just remember, Sauron is always watching.
