For years, Yoda was just chilling out on Dagobah, occasionally going out into the swamp to look for food, maybe reach out through the Force to check on the wider galaxy.
Then, all of a sudden, Luke Skywalker rocks up, forces the ageing Jedi master to teach him, carrying him around, being a bit whiny, then Yoda kicks the bucket.
Since then, fans have wondered why Yoda actually died. What was the cause? Was he just fed up with Luke?

This Redditor jokes, “there wasn't much stress until some brat showed up, lugging him around the swamp and disobeying him at every turn.”
If you want a serious answer to this, we can look to Reddit, where the discussion picked up after someone asked “Why did Yoda suddenly up and die after 900 years?”
In answer to this, pdjudd says, “Yoda says it himself. He became sick. Coupled with his extreme age, his body gave up on him. Possible Yoda knew his time was limited.”
This is followed by Martel732 explaining, “I am fairly certain that Yoda was using the Force to keep himself alive as long as he could. He probably would have died soon after the Clone Wars if he didn't keep himself alive to see the New Hope.”

I’ve always believed that Yoda was dying for years but used The Force to keep himself going because he knew he had to train someone to fight back against the Empire, Darth Vader, and the emperor.
One fan believes he suddenly got sick, saying, “I assume he simply caught a bug or something, and given his age, his body was no longer resilient enough to fight it.”
This being Star Wars, it was probably always his destiny to train Luke, and everything in his life built up to that moment, then he could finally let go.
