It is great news for fans of the original Star Wars trilogy as, for the first time in decades, the movies will be receiving a theatrical release.

Not only that but the screening will also feature the movie in its “original form” and without the changes that George Lucas made to them in the 90s.

Announced by the BFI Film on Film Festival, the event will be kicked off with a screening of 1977’s Star Wars: Episode IV - A New Hope on 12 June.

The screening will be the first time that the uncut version has ever been publicly broadcast and this “unaltered cut” comes courtesy of the BFI National Archive which has stored a dye transfer IB Technicolor print of the movie over the past few decades.

This will be the first time that millions of fans would have seen A New Hope in its original form and the first time in over 30 years that the movie has been made publicly available.

However, for some avid fans, they would have got to see this unaltered cut during the 2006 DVD release of Star Wars: Episode IV - A New Hope.

That being said, nothing beats getting to see it on the big screen this summer.

As well as getting to see the film, attendees will also have the opportunity to see parts of the original continuity script which includes on-set polaroids, annotations, and deleted scenes.

Since A New Hope was originally released back in 1977, the movie has undergone a series of changes including colour grading, added effects, and even brand-new scenes.

However, this will be the first time since the 70s that the movie will get to be experienced in all of its original glory.

The news broke over on r/StarWars and fans were quick to share their thoughts about this upcoming experience.

One user felt less than hopeful, saying: “I would not be surprised if Disney blocked it from happening.

A theater can’t just publicly show a movie without the studio’s permission.

And I have a hard time believing they’d give permission to air a cut of the film they pretend doesn’t exist.

My money is on this getting cancelled.”

It seems as though a lot of fans believe that this event will not even go ahead but if it does, it is definitely not worth missing out on.
