Everybody’s favourite underused villain is back courtesy of a new prequel comic.
In the latest issue of Legacy of Vader, the Knights of Ren’s absence in much of Star Wars’ sequel trilogy has been addressed - and it’s an explanation that includes Snoke.
Snoke was, of course, the primary villain of The Force Awakens before he was abruptly killed off in The Last Jedi.
In the much-hated The Rise of Skywalker, it was explained that Snoke was merely a failed clone ahead of Emperor Palpatine’s return.

Whereas Episodes VII and IX were helmed by JJ Abrams, it was Rian Johnson who killed Snoke off in Episode VIII.
It’s clear the two directors had differing opinions over Snoke’s significance.
Well, at least we’ve now got a slightly better idea of his backstory.
Legacy of Vader has revealed that Snoke actually cast out the Knight of Ren which explains their absence in much of the sequel trilogy.

It seems Snoke instructed Kylo Ren to leave the Knights behind in order for him to take his “next step toward [his] destiny”.
“You will leave this rabble behind. They should no longer be in your presence. Much less mine,” Snoke states.
The Knights of Ren then appear to threaten Snoke before he zaps them in retaliation.
From the looks of things, the Knights are then forced to retreat after Snoke sends a group of troopers after them.

“We didn’t just roll over,” a panel read. “We fought as best we could, but Snoke set his death squads on us.”
“We didn’t have the firepower to win that fight [...] In the end, all we could really do was run.”
“We still are. Feels like we always will be,” it continued.
As messy as the sequel trilogy can be, I quite like this backstory.

It most definitely fills in a major gap we had and it provides a satisfactory ending for the Knights of Ren.
If this is the last we ever hear of them, we know why and yet, there’s also a great opportunity to explore the group escaping this relentless persecution.
Legacy of Vader #8 is available now if you want to read the full comic.
