Star Wars accidentally kills off fan-favourite Jedi, and fans are baffled

I have never been more confused writing a Star Wars article before

Disney may have just spoiled that a much-beloved Jedi, who we all kinda assumed was alive, is actually dead, in a new Star Wars sequel trilogy comic that just released.

Alright, this is gonna take some explaining, so bear with me for a bit, folks.

Marvel Comics just released issue five of Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker, a comic book adaptation of the events of Episode 9.

Now, the plot of the comic adaptation is hitting all the same story beats as the film, but they’ve improved a few things along the way (I mean, it would have been hard to make it worse, but I digress).

Some dialogue has been altered or generally rewritten, and some scenes have been added or skipped. Overall, the community seems to agree that it’s way better than the film.

That’s great and all but, uh, why the hell is Ashoka Tano showing up as a force ghost during the culmination of Rey’s fight with Palpatine?

The funny thing is, death isn’t a new thing for Ashoka. She has died (and been resurrected) a grand total of three times, which is kind of why this reveal seems a bit out of left field.

It always felt like they were setting her up as some kind of immortal force, incapable of permanently dying, and yet… there she is, chilling in the background of a comic as a ghost.

It’s also kinda weird that they’ve done this when season 2 of the Disney+ series Ahsoka isn’t even out yet. Spoilers for the end of the season, I guess?

Even weirder still, this seems to be going against what Ahsoka’s showrunner, and creator of Ahsoka Tano, has said in the past. Dave Filoni has hinted multiple times that Ahsoka is actually alive during the events of Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker, even though her voice can be heard speaking to Rey during the events of the film.

So, what’s going on here? Is she dead or what?

Well, the r/ahsokatano subreddit doesn’t think so… because they think that’s actually Shaak Ti in the background, not Ahsoka.

Now I hope this doesn’t make me sound like I’m being racist against a fictional Star Wars species, but Shaak Ti and Ahsoka do look incredibly similar. Shaak Ti has these big white circles around her eyes however, which is the main way you can tell them apart.

I guess that’s why it’s super helpful that you can’t see whoever’s face that is properly, because it’s slightly obscured by the hood they’re wearing. The white lightsaber does point to it being more likely that it’s Ahsoka though.

Good lord, I hate how much Star Wars lore I had to learn to write this article.
