Star Wars fans divided over Luke Skywalker’s true grandfather

Will they exchange Father’s Day gifts?

Star Wars fans are divided over the true identity of Luke Skywalker’s father, but is it just another baseless theory?

We all know who Luke Skywalker’s father is, especially after that infamous line “No, I am your father,” from Darth Vader in Star Wars: Episode V: The Empire Strikes Back, that struck the fanbase to its core in 1980.

In Star Wars: Episode III: The Revenge of the Sith, after a gruelling battle with Obi-Wan Kenobi, Anakin Skywalker got his backside handed to him. But rather than being left to die on the planet Mustafar, Anakin was kept alive and augmented into Darth Vader by Darth Sidious.

But who is the father of Anakin Skywalker? A question continually asked by some Star Wars fans.

Before we cut to the meat of this article, in Star Wars: Episode I - The Phantom Menace, Anakin’s mother, Shmi, said that he had no father. Simply put, he’s a Force baby who, much like baby Jesus, was allegedly conceived out of nowhere.

That being said, some claim that he was conceived by midi-chlorians, microscopic organisms that have a strong connection to the Force and have the ability to create life via a host.

However, Redditor Movie_Advance_101 has a take on that theory. “Darth Plagueis is the father of Anakin Skywalker,” they said.

To cut a long story short, in The Revenge of the Sith, Darth Sidious (then known as Emperor Palpatine) told Anakin about Darth Plagueis, Palpatine’s former master.

Darth Plagueis was able to create powerful and unnatural life by channelling his dark side of the Force to manipulate the aforementioned midi-chlorians. Darth Plagueis was also hellbent on creating immortality through sadistic experiments.

Movie_Advance_101 suggests this is how Anakin Skywalker was conceived, but other Reddit users are not having it.

“In neither Star Wars Legends (non-canonical stories) nor canon is this true. Anakin is a result of a failed experiment, and the Force striking back against his and Sidious' machinations,” replied RandomTrainer101.

“This theory was explicitly denied in the Plagueis novel. The Force has since been confirmed to be responsible for Anakin’s conception,” said KainZeuxis.

“Please, I am begging you, and everyone in this fandom, LET THIS THEORY DIE!” pleaded danielhollenbeck13.

Will this debunked fan theory ever die? Probably not.
