Star Wars fans losing their minds over stunning new Rey/Kylo rematch

If only their original fight looked this good in the film...

Rey and Kylo are back for a rematch of their rematch that featured in Star Wars: Episode IX – The Rise of Skywalker. Or I guess it’s better to say… they never left?

Back when Disney’s sequel trilogy first hit cinemas, the films eventually received comic book adaptations from Marvel Comics, not long after the theatrical runs of each film.

That is, of course, except for Star Wars: Episode IX – The Rise of Skywalker. So, how come? Did the negative critical and fan reactions to the film simply put both Disney and Marvel off adapting the story, out of fear it wouldn’t sell?

Potentially, but that’s not the official explanation. The comic run was supposedly impacted by the COVID pandemic, according to Marvel Comics, so the slated adaptation never actually released.

That is, until now. After five years in creative limbo, the official comic book adaptation of the film is finally here, almost six years after the film first hit cinemas.

Now, with the release of issue #4, fans have finally gotten to see Rey and Kylo’s rematch in a full two page spread… and users over on the r/StarWarsCantina subreddit love it.

“It's fun to see these mirrored layouts for the dyad. It's something that works better in comic format than it would in a movie, so the comic brings something different to the story,” commented user Flock_of_Porgs.

“I think it's a clever way to make up for the fact that you don't have other elements, like sound effects, that make this scene so cool in the movie.”

“I haven’t gotten to the novelisation yet (I definitely should), though the dialogue for both this or the comic IMO still line up with how Rey and Kylo’s relationship and dynamic is like. The novel dialogue as you described is more nuanced, while the comic IMO leans into the emotional tension at that stage in the story,” replied user MarthsBars.

“Nonetheless, the visuals still remain on point with showing their light/dark contrast. Like the huge two-page spreads you get in major manga chapters, this helps to make the big duel feel impactful.”

Gotta admit, I think the artwork looks absolutely beautiful. It’s almost enough to make me think that the film was better than I actually remember it being… almost.
