Spider-Man 2 fans just realising there was a major cameo you definitely missed

Marvel films are filled with cameos nowadays, but even back before the MCU was a thing and Sony was making Spider-Man films, there were appearances you might not expect.

Once cameo for Spider-Man 2 is very much a ‘blink and you’ll miss it’ turn for another Marvel star of the time.

Sony aren't done with the Spider-Man villains as Venom: The Last Dance is in cinemas soon

It seems that Thomas Jane was due to appear in Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man 2 as The Punisher, but there were som contractual issues that prevented him from starring.

This didn’t stop the creators however and instead of casting Jane, they turned to his stunt double.

According to the Reddit thread, this news was first revealed on DVD commentary.

It was stated that “this is intended to be Frank Castle, who also starred in his own movie in 2004.”

It’s an odd decision to feature Frank Castle in the first place given The Punisher wasn’t overly popular at the time and the film didn’t do too well with fans or critics.

Of course, this was simply Sony flexing muscles that eventually would build the MCU to some degree and become a staple of the Marvel universe.

Cameos are the bread and butter of superhero films, as they are for comic books.

Another Redditor in the thread goes on to reveal more about Sony’s plans for cameos, “First there was the attempt at getting Wolverine in Spider-man 1, which failed either because they couldn't find the costume or the execs said no, and then this… I'm surprised they didn't try getting Nick Cage's ghost rider in Spider-Man 3.”

I personally love the screenshot in that post which shows the stunt double looking back at the camera in the most pointless way.

Even if it was Thomas Jane it’s unlikely anyone would have noticed or even cared that some random dude on the street was seemingly staring at Mary Jane.
