Rumours have been circling around the internet for months now, but we finally got our official confirmation last night that, yes, Disney really is working on a new The Punisher project set in the MCU starring Jon Bernthal.

Brad Winderbaum, the head of Marvel Television, revealed the news in an interview with Entertainment Weekly last night.

"It's like a shotgun blast of a story, but also has all the pathos and emotion that you want out of a Frank Castle story," Winderbaum revealed to EW, "It's so exciting."

Perhaps most excitingly, he also revealed that Bernthal will be writing the script for the new project, alongside We Own This City director Reinaldo Marcus Green.

"Bernthal is a generational actor," Winderbaum continued, "He's incredible what he brings to all the roles he plays, but particularly Frank Castle. And he's a great writer. He knows the character inside and out... Also, I love Punisher, but I love Jon's Punisher in particular. The idea that he's in the MCU and can bring that to the greater universe, especially the more grounded street-level stuff, is a huge opportunity and, as a fan, the greatest thing ever."

Daredevil: Born Again looks fantastic.

According to Winderbaum, the new project won’t be a series however.

By the sounds of things, based on the fact that it’s being labelled as a “Marvel Special Presentation”, this is going to be a one-off, Werewolf by Night-style TV movie.

Beyond this, we don’t know much else. A release date, plot details and further casting details are unknown to us at this stage, as it sounds like the project is in a very early stage of production.

However, I think we’ll probably be a little wiser as to the plot once Daredevil: Born Again officially begins on 4 March, considering The Punisher has already been confirmed to be making a return.
