Marvel's Thunderbolts will reportedly feature two surprise MCU returns

Marvel's Thunderbolts will reportedly see two familiar MCU characters make a return.

Marvel’s upcoming villain-centered movie is set for 2025 and with rumours of its star-studded cast swirling on the internet, recent leaks claim two surprise characters are set to make a return to the MCU.

Thunderbolts is the latest Marvel project to grab fan’s attention with the movie set to bring a whole new take to the franchise. Directed by Jake Schreier, a large cast of actors are already reported to be starring in the villain-centric title including Sebastian Stan as Bucky Barnes, Florence Pugh as Yelena Belova, David Harbour as Red Guardian, Olga Kurylenko as Antonia Dreykov/ Taskmaster, Wyatt Russell as John Walker/ US Agent, Julia Louis-Dreyfus as Valentina Allegra de Fontaine, Harrison Ford as Thaddeus 'Thunderbolt' Ross and Ayo Edebiri in an undisclosed role.

Now thanks to a report by Production Weekly, we've discovered that both Rachel Weisz and Laurence Fishburne are reportedly set to reprise their roles as Melina Vostokoff and Bill Foster. Melina was last seen in Black Widow with Fishburne starring as Bill Foster in Ant-Man and the Wasp. It is nice to see the latter set to reprise his role after the actor expressed his excitement during an interview with ComicBook last year.

"You know, I'm a big MCU guy, man. I love the Marvel Cinematic Universe and as much I would love to be in it," Fishburne said. "I'm happy being a fan and will be waiting for whatever's coming. Yeah, man like I just heard in Atlanta, I heard they're getting ready to do another Captain America… Bring it. I'm buying tickets dude!"

With the MCU usually focusing on the heroes, it will be interesting to see its take on the villains and antiheroes of the franchise. According to actor Wyatt Russell, Thunderbolts will not be a straightforward movie.

“I think that it's gonna be a lot of fun but I think it will be something that hopefully Marvel fans will look at and go, 'Oh OK, this is a little different, let's go hard at it,’” he stated. “And as far as how we are approaching it, it's time to go to work a little bit, it's time to make a good Marvel movie so let's do that and work hard at it and don't take things for granted."

Thunderbolts is set to be released on 25 July, 2025.
