The Marvel press release machine is firing on all cylinders following Deadpool & Wolverine's premiere in New York on Monday.

Disney are clearly banking on the success of the latest MCU title, as they've dragged poor old Kevin Feige out of whatever underground bunker they had him stored in so they can generate some extra buzz for its worldwide release.

In a recent interview with DiscussingFilm, Feige was specifically asked about the potential return of Robert Downey Jr.'s Iron Man following Hugh Jackman's reprisal of his role as Wolverine in Deadpool & Wolverine.

"That’s the key, right?" replied Feige, "How do you do it in a way that maintains what has come before, and in a great way? And we’ve been spending, you know, the last two-plus years figuring that out for Wolverine."

"So, what’s to come? We’ll see." he continued, "We’re just proud that we, I think, have figured it out for Wolverine. I think Hugh’s appearance and starring role in [Deadpool & Wolverine] is a great sign that it can be done — if great care is taken."

It's no secret that both the Marvel Cinematic Universe's ticket sales and review scores have been slipping ever since the release of 2019's Avengers: Endgame, which also featured Robert Downey Jr.'s last on screen appearance as Iron Man.

Of course Avengers: Endgame was somewhat of a phenomenon as far as box office numbers are concerned so it's a little unfair to compare it to the other MCU films that followed, but Disney is obviously desperate to replicate its success - and teasing the return of Iron Man would be the best way to do so.

Whether or not Robert Downey Jr. wants to come back is another story altogether, as he's clearly been enjoying taking on roles in more serious films and shows (such as Oppenheimer and The Sympathizer) since his departure.

He did reportedly earn somewhere around 130 million dollars for his last appearance in the MCU though, so I'm sure he'd be happy to rake in another boatload of cash for a small cameo in an upcoming Marvel film.
