The merc with a mouth is well and truly alive in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, but a far more unfortunate fate has befallen his comic book counterpart.

Following the launch of Deadpool & Wolverine, the character is arguably more popular than ever, but Marvel Comics has never been afraid to push the envelope.

Why? Well, unlike in a cinematic universe, no one is ever really dead in the glorious world of comic books.

Instead, simply one story run ends, opening up the opportunity for a brand new one.

For now though, at least, Wade Wilson has kicked the bucket.

The character was killed off in Deadpool #6, with his misfortune starting following the introduction of the villain Death Grip.

Anyone who’s a fan of Deadpool will know that the character has a handy ability that allows him to heal - that was until Death Grip took it away.

Yet to watch Deadpool & Wolverine? It’s set to land on Disney Plus on 25 October.

As reported by Comic Book, in Deadpool #6, the merc with a mouth is left wheelchair-bound after he’s unable to regenerate a new right leg and arm following a fight with Death Grip.

In the prior issue, Death Grip had visited Deadpool, with Deadpool cutting off the villain's hands to prevent him from doing further dark magic.

If you thought that was the last of Death Grip though, you thought wrong.

It was because Death Grip had previously absorbed the Muramasa Blade that the foe was able to prohibit Deadpool’s regenerative powers.

Deadpool is under the assumption that his power will return having now bested Death Grip, but the villain somehow returns and with his hands both intact again.

It’s not explained how this is possible as we’re led to believe the Muramasa Blade nullifies healing powers, but perhaps Wade’s ability is somehow transferred into Death Grip?

Regardless, a fully-handed Death Grip visits Deadpool once more - this time, cutting off his left arm.

The character then uses a kind of explosive spell which is essentially what seals the deal and kills Deadpool.

We’re shown his corpse as he whispers “Ellie”, his daughter’s name.

Cody Ziglar, Rogê Antônio, Guru-eFX, and VC Joe Sabino make up this issue’s creative team.

So that’s it for Deadpool, for now. I’m sure the geniuses at Marvel Comics are already squirreling away on how the character will be brought back to life.

In the meantime, however, it’ll be great to see Ellie assuming a tad more responsibility.
