Following the release of the first trailer for Captain America: Brave New World, Marvel fans are angry over the inclusion of a particular character and are now calling for a boycott of the film.

Many Marvel fans have been eagerly awaiting the latest installment in the franchise, due out next year. It will be the first film to feature Anthony Mackie as Captain America since he took on the shield in the Disney+ show, The Falcon and the Winter Soldier.

The problem for many fans is the casting of the actress Shira Haas, who will appear in the film as Sabra, a former Black Widow and now a United States official with ties to Harrison Ford’s character of President Ross.

Shira Haas is an Israeli actress playing a woman who volunteered in the Israeli Defence Forces (IDF) before becoming a superhero. She will be playing Sabra, a very controversial hero in the comics, originally appearing 40 years ago in blue and white with her costume featuring the Star of David.

Due to the ongoing genocide in Palestine and the treatment of the Palestinian people, Marvel fans are calling for a boycott of the film in response to Haas’ appearance.

Marvel and Disney have been facing backlash since the casting was announced and are now facing even more pressure since Haas appeared in the trailer for the film.

Taking to social media platforms fans are begging others not to see the film, review it, or give it any coverage.

While the film will likely avoid any connection to the genocide currently ongoing in the real world, it’s hard for fans to divorce what they see on the screen from what we see in our social media feeds every day.

Most are concerned that featuring an Israeli character at this current time is in poor taste and, as mentioned on Twitter, that ‘Sabra’ is the name of a village where “thousands of Palestinians & Lebanese were massacred.”
