Well, this is quite the turn of events. The Last of Us’ co-showrunner Craig Mazin has said that he’s open to the possibility of spin-offs.

I say it’s a turn of events as previously, Mazin and Neil Druckmann assured fans that HBO’s The Last of Us wouldn’t outstay its welcome, despite its success. They confirmed their intention not to go beyond the story established in the games, saying that they wouldn’t pull a Game of Thrones. We do know though that it’s expected that the show will go on for at least four seasons. Unfortunately, details on season two are thin on the ground due to delays caused by the WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes - although it’s perfectly understandable why those bodies are both striking. In the meantime, Mazin teased that they may have found their season two Abby - and now he’s discussed his thoughts on potential spin-off series.

Want to relive the magic? Take a look at the trailer for HBO’s The Last of Us below.

In an interview with The Wrap, Mazin said that they hadn’t exactly discussed spin-offs but that there’s interest there. “We haven’t talked about that specifically because we’re so focused on just telling this main narrative. I’m not against the idea of other shows that may draw from these characters or that world,” Mazin said.

He continued, “I don’t know how much more The Last of Us I personally would be able to do. I mean, these shows are so big, I’m sort of burning one of the precious few remaining decades I have on telling this story. But in principle, I have no issue with it whatsoever. And I’m sure Neil would be interested as well.”

“If there was something that made sense, then I don’t see why not. My great hope is that if there is anything like that, that it’s done with as much care and respect and love as what we are applying to this series right now.” Are you team spin-off, or is the franchise better left untouched? I’m not sure fans are going to want another The Walking Dead-esque universe on their hands.
