The Harry Potter series is filled with controversial characters. However, it’s fair to say that the fandom unanimously dislikes this particular character above many others.

Consequently, no tears will be shed now that we’ve learnt that they were killed off in a rather mundane way.

Some would argue it’s befitting of this Harry Potter character to meet such an unremarkable fate.

Over the course of the franchise, Harry is treated badly by many individuals. But for most of the fandom, among the worst of them is Aunt Petunia.

Anyone up for a game of Harry Potter: Quidditch Champions? It seems a lot of us have forgot this game exists

Petunia’s treatment of Harry, while not necessarily more damning than that of her husband, Vernon, is deemed far less inexcusable because she’s Harry’s mum’s sister.

Her jealousy of her sister becomes disdain for Harry, resulting in a boy living an incredibly miserable life during his formative years.

Even though this is a work of fiction, fans find such behaviour unforgivable.

Petunia’s actions have made her the epicentre of many a Harry Potter debate.

What is more, it means that no love is lost now that we’re discovering her character actually died.

In the sequel, Harry Potter and the Cursed Child, it’s revealed that Petunia died sometime before 2020.

The reasons for her death are unknown, though undoubtedly few fans will care.

Still, for some, Petunia’s fate may seem too kind – much like the fate that befalls Lucius after Deathly Hallows, what awaits them feels far too lenient.

The lack of satisfaction many feel after the sorrowful events of Deathly Hallows continues after fans learnt the heartbreaking truth of George Weasley’s life following the death of Fred.

There;s much pain in these stories. Nonetheless, the fact that Petunia died is information that will neither polarise nor upset the fandom.

Sometimes, a character being killed off is the best course of action an author can take.

Maybe one day we’ll learn how she died, but for now, what happened to her will remain unknown.
