DCU boss confirms our new Aquaman is a departure from Jason Momoa

There’ll be a new face of Atlantis

DCU boss James Gunn has confirmed that we’ll have a very different Aquaman than the one recently portrayed by Jason Momoa.

Much like Marvel, I’ve been a DC fan as far as I can remember, as a child, watching all the cartoons and picking up whatever comic books my pocket money would allow. Over the years, Marvel and DC have changed a lot, for better or worse.

One of the best things about being a Marvel and DC fan nowadays is seeing our favourite heroes and villains on the silver screen in live-action form.

Sure, it’s not always been great, because we’ve had some truly stinker comic book live-action adaptations, but I believe in the long run, we’ve had more good than bad.

That being said, while the MCU hasn't always hit a homerun (far from it), the DCEU, or the DCU as it’s now known, has been far more inconsistent.

With the release of Superman in cinemas this month, starring David Corenswet as the new Man of Steel, and with James Gunn and Peter Safran in charge of the DCU, hopefully, the live-action adaptations from the Marvel rival will fare much better.

As inconsistent as the DCEU was before James Gunn took charge, one of the best character portrayals was with Jason Momoa’s King of Atlantis, Aquaman. However, while Jason Momoa is returning in the DCU, it won't be as Arthur Curry but as the bounty hunter Lobo in Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow, arriving in cinemas next year.

So, with Aquaman being such a pivotal and important character in DC, as reported by The Direct, James Gunn has teased that he’ll appear in the DCU, but he’ll differ from the one portrayed by Jason Momoa.

When talking on the official Peacemaker podcast, James Gunn teased that “it’s unlikely that Aquaman is a famous hero” in the DCU, considering that he is never mentioned in Superman.

It’s not much to go on, but it suggests to me that we might get an origin story of sorts, or at least, Aquaman does already exist in James Gunn’s DCU, but he’s very good at remaining unknown to the public eye.

I’m not only intrigued by who will play the new Aquaman, but also what his personality will be like in the DCU.

Will Aquaman be goofy and not taken seriously by some fans, as was the case with many of the DC comics, or will he still be a badass, similar to Jason Momoa’s version? Only time will tell.

Details on the new Aquaman movie have remained under wraps, so his arrival could likely be two or three years away. As always, we’ll keep you updated when we learn more.
