Batman fans discover what became of Dark Knight Rises' Robin

It was simply never meant to be

You know what they say, there’s no Batman without Robin … unless you’re Christopher Nolan that is.

The famed auteur’s The Dark Knight trilogy rarely saw Batman without the help of his trusted butler Alfred, but Robin is largely left out of the mix.

It’s not until the third and final film, The Dark Knight Rises, that we’re introduced to the character and even then, it’s the very early days of the duo's relationship.

We first meet Robin as rookie cop John Blake.

Over the course of The Dark Knight Rises, Bruce and John begin to develop a kinship with many fans assuming that this would lead to a Robin spin-off.

Clearly though, that never came.

Nolan has moved on from the franchise, with Robert Pattinson’s The Batman now the dominant caped crusader property.

As it turns out though, Robin John Blake actor Joseph Gordon-Levitt has opened up about exactly why the suspected Robin spin-off never came to fruition.

Looking for a new superhero fix? Deadpool & Wolverine releases later this month. Take a look at the film’s trailer below.

In an interview with Inverse, Gordon-Levitt said, “Nolan was making a trilogy. He never wanted to make any more movies.”

“This was an ending to his trilogy. It’s funny, we look back on it now with the context of the Marvel Cinematic Universe — everything is a sequel to a sequel to a sequel. But back in those olden days, doing a trilogy was a lot, and that was how it was thought of.”

It appears then as if we were, as viewers, perhaps just supposed to assume that Robin would take on the mantle Bruce leaves behind at the end of the film, rather than watching it unfold.

We shan’t mourn this lost spin-off too deeply though. There are plenty of other Batman projects on the way.

The aforementioned Pattinson will return in The Batman Part II in 2026.

There’s also Joker: Folie á Deux later this year, as well as season one of The Penguin.
