Assassin's Creed's New Lead Has Already Divided Gamers

Hopefully it's better than last time...

Assassin’s Creed is getting another live-action adaptation and the lead role is already causing confusion and arguments.

The Assassin’s Creed series is a vast web of possibilities as new entries can happen anywhere at any time in human history.

We’ve been to Feudal Japan, Colonial America, Victorian England and Ancient Greece; the list goes on, yet Ubisoft isn’t done yet.

While we wait for the next game along, Assassin’s Creed Hexe, we have news about a live-action TV series in development with Netflix, including its main star.

It was recently announced that actor Toby Wallace has been cast as co-lead in the upcoming series. Wallace is known for starring in shows like The Society and recently joined the cast of Euphoria for its third season.

Now which character Wallace will be playing is unknown but the show is said to begin filming in Italy sometime in 2026.

As such gamers are convinced that he’ll be playing Ezio but it’s said the series will tell an original story that doesn’t tread over the established lore from the games, so it sounds like he’ll be playing a completely new assassin.

However there are fans who believe he won’t be playing an assassin at all, as his exact role in the series is “co-lead”.

As such some fans are speculating the series “will have a different actor for the person on the animus and the person whose memory they’re in” which sounds plausible.

While many Assassin’s Creed fans are excited, there are others who still feel the burn from the last time a live-action project was attempted for this series.

“Not to be that guy, but Assassin’s Creed is one of the few franchises that really shouldn’t get a live-action adaptation,” read one fan’s take. “The series’ strength is in its stylised worlds, parkour, historical settings, and the whole Animus concept, which would look way better in animation,” they continued.

Assassin’s Creed (2016)

In case you’d forgotten, and I hope you have, an Assassin’s Creed film was released in cinemas back in 2016 and it was awful.

Starring Michael Fassbender the story followed an original plot that mirrored that of the games, and while it nailed the costumes and even got the iconic ‘leap of faith’ in there, it ultimately flopped hard.

Hopefully, this new Netflix adaptation can stick the landing, though shows and films based on video games are hit-or-miss nowadays.

For every Fallout, you have a Halo.
