What do you get if you cross The Last of Us with Far Cry, by way of Fallout? This PC game coming to Steam, of course.

That’s not an elaborate joke setup, those are the vibes we’re getting from Forest Reigns, a new Steam game coming sometime soon.

Really, any post-apocalyptic game is going to give off Fallout vibes, right? But, the winding greenery and pops of colour don’t really evoke that wasteland.

We’re really looking at something more akin to The Last of Us, here, because the cities are still standing and nature is taking over.

Forest Reigns is a first-person shooter set in Paris, after an evolving forest beings to take over civilisation, which explains the plants and trees.

Animals are running rampant, warped beyond recognition, and it’s up to you to clear them out and survive in this crumbling world.

Watching the game in action, it’s got that satisfying gunplay we’d see in Far Cry, and you can mod and upgrade your weapons to get the better of dangers surrounding you.

This is a gorgeous looking experience and one that feels a bit claustrophobic despite the city landscapes, as trees loom over you, and enemies hem you in.

Interestingly, the forest is almost sentient and can be used to your advantage or fall foul of it as it reacts to your actions.

Perhaps you can use it as a trap, or maybe you’ll find yourself battered by vines if you put too many bullets into the various plants.

In-game factions can become a thorn in your side, or have you work with them to desperately live another day.

There’s currently no release date set for Forest Reigns, sadly, but it’s shaping up to be an interesting tale, very different from the usual post-apocalyptic games we’ve seen over the years.
