Released in 2019, Tom Clancy’s The Division 2 is the sequel to its 2016 counterpart. Set in a near-future New York City, Tom Clancy’s The Division is an online-only, action RPG looter shooter in which a viral pandemic plagues the world and the economy crashes, causing widespread panic and chaos.

The sequel follows on from the 2016 story and offers pretty much more of the same in terms of gameplay, but this time we’re taken to Washington D.C. The player assumes the role of an agent of the Strategic Homeland Division and is tasked to rebuild the city and inspire society to rise from the ashes.

While the sequel didn't mix it up all that much in relation to its predecessor, it made subtle tweaks here and there, resulting in Tom Clancy’s The Division 2 being a more enjoyable and accessible experience for fans. Which is probably why it scored slightly higher on Metacritic. The original game scored around 80, with the sequel being in the 82 ballpark.

Despite the subtle improvements, Tom Clancy’s The Division 2 isn't exactly racking it in when it comes to concurrent players. To be fair, it’s been four years since its release, so a decline by now is only natural. At the time of writing on SteamDB, the 24-hour peak on PC sits at 1,240 concurrent players. Yet, the all-time peak isn't all that great either at 11,002.

That being said, in preparation for Year 5, Ubisoft is offering Tom Clancy’s The Division 2 for free for a limited time. From today, 18 May until Sunday, 21 May, Tom Clancy’s The Division 2 will be free-to-play across all available platforms. However, an Xbox Live Gold subscription will be required to play on the green brand.

What’s more, with this being a free-to-play weekend, all your stats will carry over should you decide to purchase the full game. Moreover, if you do decide to make the purchase, you can save up to 85% on dedicated digital storefronts across all platforms.

Tom Clancy’s The Division 2 is out now for PC, PlayStation and Xbox. In related news, sadly those that may be waiting for a new-gen update could be waiting for an eternity.
