The Callisto Protocol is stirring up a lot of excitement. Striking Distance Studios’ debut title is the brainchild of Dead Space developer Glen Schofield.

Set aboard the Black Iron Prison, The Callisto Protocol sees players take on the role of prisoner Jacob Lee who must survive after a horde of terrifying mutants board the prison. Schofield has promised that The Callisto Protocol will be “the single most scariest game for PC and consoles,” and now we know it’s also going to be much gorier than Dead Space.

To see some of The Callisto Protocol’s gore in action, take a look at this terrifying sequence of gameplay.

In an interview with Eurogamer, Schofield opened up about The Callisto Protocol’s gore which was so intense that the devs had to create their own gore technology. Schofield explained, “It's got some pretty horrific moments, it really does. We have a gore engine - we built gore technology. It's a lot of rendering, and you break up the characters into jumps, cut them up with bones sticking out and all that.”

“Then the rendering guys, they do their special thing to it which is make everything look wet. And so every character had to be done that way - and however you go at it, chunks break off, or parts of the face, parts of the head. It's so advanced compared to Dead Space,” he added.

That sounds mighty disturbing. Just a few weeks ago, it was revealed that The Callisto Protocol’s developers controversially studied real examples of violence and gore. Many have questioned the wellbeing of the developers but Schofield added, “Nowadays the internet is loaded with those kinds of pictures. I mean, these guys were looking at some horrible stuff. It's hard to tell now on the internet. Is that real, or is that fake? There's some horrible stuff - like pictures of people who just shot their face off. And we have reams of that data. They really get into it. It doesn't bother them after a while.”

Well, I’ll be thinking happy thoughts for the rest of the day but if The Callisto Protocol is up your alley, you have just five months to wait.
