Steam has been a very good source of free games to play over the years, and that trend has continued apace this year, with plenty of new games we can jump into at absolutely no cost.

As pointed out by Free Steam Games over on Twitter/X, 12 new free games have just hit the storefront and there's an offering from basically every genre you can think of, so there should be something that appeals.

First up is Gnomeball, is a relatively simple football game where teams of 1-4 gnomes play the sport on a backyard pitch decorated with garden ornaments. It's a cute approach to the sports genre and it really replicates those early multiplayer browser games, only with nicer visuals.

Then there is Word Quest; a fast-paced action game where you'll need to cast spells at enemies in order to kill them. All very normal, but to successfully get your spells out, you'll need to type the name of the spell correctly, or you'll simply fail to cast anything.

Easily the funniest game on this list, Exploding Judo Federation is a 3D fighting game where players fight in a minefield. If you fail to counter your enemy and they throw you to the floor, you will explode and die, which is frankly a pretty hilarious premise.

Changing tac entirely, Senior Sunset is a survival horror set in a high school which, in the developer's own words, sees players 'take on the role of Amanda, an aspiring podcaster who yearns for a good story- something to really get some people tuning in'.

"You break into your own high school to investigate, finding the truth behind the murders and uncovering that the truth is far more sinister than you could've ever imagined," they add.

It's a compelling premise and one that looks very well executed, with highly eerie visuals and a dark aesthetic that should do enough to create scares.

Our last specific pick this time around is Night of the Extinct, a game where you play as a paranormal content creator who elects to spend the night at a haunted museum. It looks like Phasmophobia meets Night at the Museum, and who doesn't like that as an idea?

Rounding out the list of free games this time around is Days Without Incident, Dorothy's Job, Yuki, YogLabs: Testing Initiative, Highrise, Werewolves Revenge and Puzzle Gallery: Jigsaw Art Collection, all of which are sitting on at least relatively positive feedback at the time of writing.
