The next big Star Wars project seems to be abandoning canon for a blockbuster story, leaving behind the complex and sometimes messy history.

Star Wars has always had a strange relationship with ‘canon’ and ‘lore.’ After the huge success of the universe debuting, creators were able to write any stories they wanted through comics and books.

Many of these projects went on to be hugely successful and big hits with fans of George Lucas’ world.

However, after Disney swooped in to buy up the franchise, they relegated the stories outside of film and TV to become ‘Legends’ and not official canon.

Now Disney is embracing the idea of stories that exist outside the Skywalker Saga and the storied history of what has come before, with the next season of Star Wars: Visions.

This shouldn’t come as news for those locked in to Star Wars, seeing as neither of the first two seasons of Star Wars: Visions are also not considered canon, however, it appears Lucasfilm is being more vocal about it this time around.

What this means for viewers is a reality where the actions and scenarios within the Disney+ show will not have any impact or ramifications on the overall plot and universe of Star Wars.

This gives creators more freedom to move within the galaxy, not stepping on any toes, and being able to use characters more loosely.

Star Wars: Visions sits alongside the LEGO adventures, which are also not considered part of the canon, despite many episodes from the upcoming third season continuing stories established in previous seasons.

Don’t expect this to have a big impact, or for Disney to start embracing this further, as the Star Wars property has become very valuable to the house of mouse, and they’ll likely want any new material folded into the lore.
