The Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic remake is taking ages but hopefully it’ll be worth the wait.
Judging from a fresh look at the game that’s leaked online, though it’s easy to tell why things are taking so long…
Originally, the Knights of the Old Republic remake was in development with Aspyr though it’d be an understatement to say it went through development hell.
It’s claimed that the old-school RPG mechanics had been scrapped for a real-time combat system akin to the Final Fantasy VII remakes, which worked well enough for Square Enix’s games but is far from the gold standard.

While the leaked footage doesn’t show the gameplay, it does show us one of the game’s cutscenes, but be warned, it’s very rough.
YouTuber 100% Star Wars posted a breakdown of the footage which featured an unfinished scene with poor dialogue.
Only a snippet of the footage can be seen but 100% Star Wars goes into more detail on what they saw throughout the video. Initial thoughts were surprisingly positive, as the way the story plays out was very faithful to the original but with a few modern touches.
It’s the combat that sounds like the biggest problem but that’s changed for the better since the cancellation.
Aspyr’s take on the remake is dead and buried, and it’s now in development with Saber Interactive.
Like the previous remake, little has been said about but the latest claims say it’s taking inspiration from other successful RPGs like Baldur’s Gate 3.
Obviously, that’s great news but we’ll temper our expectations until we actually see the remake rather than hear about it.
Aspyr’s remake was announced during a PlayStation showcase in 2021 and there just so happens to be a PlayStation State of Play scheduled for 2 June…
In all likelihood, the remake won’t be there but we can dream. Summer Game Fest and Gamescom’s Opening Night Live are also possibilities, but the most likely time to see the game probably has to be the 2026 Game Awards.
We’re also yet to see more of the sequel, Star Wars: Fate of the Old Republic which was announced during last year’s Game Awards ceremony.
We know which one we want to see first, but it’s down to the powers that be to actually give us that sneak peek.
In the meantime, both Knights of the Old Republic games are playable on the Xbox Series X/S via backwards compatibility, the Nintendo Switch/Nintendo Switch 2 and PC. Perhaps it’s time for a replay?
