At this point, we might as well forget about the Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic remake, but thankfully, these upcoming sci-fi games should scratch that same itch.

The Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic remake was first revealed in 2021, an updated version of the legendary sci-fi RPG from BioWare, originally released in 2003 on PC and Xbox.

However, since its announcement, we’ve heard nothing other than its troubled development, with many concerned that the remake might not be released. While some reports claim that the remake is still happening, right now, it’s probably best we take nothing for granted.

Thankfully, despite the Knights of the Old Republic developmental woes, there are at least a plethora of other promising sci-fi games that should be released before it graces us with its presence, and we’ll let you know some of our juicy picks right here.

Here Are Six Upcoming Games to Scratch That KOTOR Itch

EXODUS, Wizards of the Coast

EXODUS - PC, PS5 and Xbox - Release Date: Expected 2027

Developed by Archetype Entertainment, EXODUS looks like a cross between Mass Effect and Fallout, which isn't a bad combination, it has to be said. In this action-adventure RPG, you are humanity's last hope of survival against a species known as Celestials. Its world looks intriguing, combat looks intense, and your choices will shape the story. It feels like a perfect game for BioWare fans.

Judas - PC, PS5 and Xbox - Release Date: TBA

Judas might not look like your typical sci-fi action RPG, but it most certainly has sci-fi and RPG elements, so we’ll take it. Developed by Ken Levine’s Ghost Story Games, Judas is the highly anticipated BioShock spiritual successor we’ve been waiting for. Trapped on a decaying starship with crazed humans who have ungodly supernatural abilities and relentless, out-of-control robots, you’re desperate to escape this intergalactic hell, but at what cost?

SOL Shogunate - PC, PS5 and Xbox - Release Date: Expected 2027

Brought to us by Chaos Manufacturing, SOL Shogunate looks like a cross between Mass Effect, Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice, and Blade Runner. Oh, and it looks amazing. Of course, there’s no telling whether or not it will play as well as it looks in the trailers, but from what we’ve seen, it at least looks promising. SOL Shogunate doesn't have a release date yet, but could it be a surprise hit of its launch year? Only time will tell.

Squadron 42 - PC - Release Date: Expected 2026

Squadron 42 is a single-player, sci-fi action RPG, developed by Cloud Imperium Games, the studio behind Star Citizen. You play as a militant UEE Navy combat pilot who aims to one day be the best pilot in the galaxy. But when an alien invasion threatens all of humanity, your aspirations must be put on hold for the greater good. Squadron 42 also features a star-studded cast with the likes of Mark Hamill, Gary Oldman, Gillian Anderson, Andy Serkis, and more. Hopefully, its budget wasn't blown on casting its stars, and this game ends up being a banger.

The Expanse: Osiris Reborn, Owlcat Games

The Expanse: Osiris Reborn - PC, PS5 and Xbox - Release Date: Expected 2027

This nice-looking sci-fi action-adventure RPG from Owlcat Games looks like a blend of Mass Effect and Starfield. The combat looks intense, there are lush cinematics, as well as a story shrouded in conspiracy, high-octane combat, and a galaxy that makes you want to explore to your heart's content. The Expanse: Osiris Reborn looks like it might be a blast. You can also create your own character from scratch, which is always a welcome feature.

Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet - PS5 - Release Date: Expected 2027

Announced during The Game Awards 2024, Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet is the next game from The Last of Us and Uncharted studio, Naughty Dog. Set in a retro-inspired faraway future, you play as bounty hunter Jordan A. Mun. When a bounty leads her to a remote, ruthless planet called Sempiria, Jordan soon realises that her latest job has just become a lot more complicated. We’re yet to see proper gameplay for this game, but it’s safe to assume we’ll be treated to a tense and emotional story that only Naughty Dog knows how to deliver.

Honourable Mention, Saros

If you're itching to play a sci-fi game this year, with plenty of high-octane action, a mysterious world and a story leaving you wanting more, look no further than Saros, available from 30 April.

“We’ve been spoiled with what could be the best year for gaming since 2023, and now Saros is the latest banger of 2026,” I said in my review. “It plays like a dream, has a fun gameplay loop, looks stunning, has a superb voice cast and a mysterious story that will keep you hooked from start to finish. Saros is a game that I can’t stop thinking about.”
