Star Wars fans divided on origins of Yoda's species, and we get it

Do we need to know why the little green man talks funny?

Star Wars fans would love to know more about Yoda, what he is, where he comes from, and why he talks like that, but they know it should never happen.

George Lucas created Yoda for Star Wars Episode V: The Empire Strikes Back because he needed a new mentor for Luke after Obi-Wan dies in the prior film.

According to Lucas himself, he didn’t put much thought into what exactly Yoda is and why he’s so powerful, he was literally just a plot device to continue Luke’s training.

That said fans loved him and he went on to appear in future Star Wars films and TV shows, prompting more and more questions about who is and what his origins are.

Personally I’ve never wanted to know where he comes from but many fans have, yet they know the answer is better off a mystery.

“I think this is a perfect example of when lore could not possibly live up to people’s expectations. There have been theories for decades about it, from mundane to absurd” read one fan’s take on the matter.

Chances are Yoda was just a normal-ish alien that just so happened to have a strong connection to the force, like many other Jedi that have come and gone.

“Do I want lore on his species? Yes. Should I get lore on his species? No” said another fan, again probably knowing the answer would be far less impressive than what we’d hope it’d be.

Another said “we don’t need it” going on to say that “Yoda’s origin was intended to remain a mystery, and it’s nearly the only corner of the source material left that’s still unexplored and should remain so.”

Even The Mandalorian, which features another of Yoda’s species, has done a fine job of adding to the mystery without actually giving us the answers.

Hopefully that remains the case, as God forbid if Din Djarin finds a planet full of Yodas and Grogus it might be the biggest fumble Disney has done with Star Wars since Episode IX…
