'Squid Game' Creator Says You Should Chill Out About The Reality Show

"What I hope is that they will be carrying on my vision and intention as much as possible for the show."

Hwang Dong-hyuk, the creator of the survival drama show Squid Game where contestants must participate in twisted versions of children's playground games to win a life-changing cash prize, has said that the recent reality TV show adaptation isn't anything to wring our hands over.

As announced in June, Netflix is creating Squid Game: The Challenge as a new game show directly inspired by the sensational Squid Game. 456 contestants will try their utmost to win the $4.56 million prize, though Netflix has been clear that there will be no endangering of people's lives, saying that "the worst fate is going home empty-handed." To be fair, the characters of Squid Game were also given the opportunity to leave the game, but they almost all returned. Obviously, no spoilers for why they re-enter the competition for those of us who haven't caught up with the hugely popular survival show yet.

Here's one of the most horrifying games in Squid Game recreated in Roblox. That checks out.

Speaking to Entertainment Weekly after winning the Emmy for Outstanding Directing for a Drama Series, Hwang was unruffled about the statements that a new version of the gory show and its underlying themes would be made into a reality TV show. "Yes, I am aware of the reality show being created," he said. "I actually met with the creator yesterday, and they had many questions for me. What I hope is that they will be carrying on my vision and intention as much as possible for the show."

"I think that even though our show does carry quite a heavy message, and I know there are some concerns of taking that message and creating it into a reality show with a cash prize, however I feel like whenever you take things too seriously, that's really not the best way to go for the entertainment industry," continued Hwang. "Doesn't really set a great precedent. So I would say that reproductions of such efforts are going to bring new meaning to the industry, and I hope that this is going to be a great new direction for the industry overall."
