'Sonic 2' Producer Confirms Jim Carrey's Robotnik Will Never Be Recast

It can't be done!

There's been a lot of talk about Jim Carrey lately. The beloved actor is currently winning over a whole new generation of kids for his turn as the villainous Doctor Robotnik in Sonic The Hedgehog 2, for one thing.

Unfortunately, older fans were devastated to learn earlier this week that Carrey is considering giving up acting for good.

Take a look at our Sonic The Hedgehog 2 chat with the man himself below!

“If the angels bring some sort of script that’s written in gold ink that says to me that it’s going to be really important for people to see, I might continue down the road - but I’m taking a break," Carrey told Access Hollywood. “I really like my quiet life and I really like putting paint on canvas and I really love my spiritual life and I feel like, and this is something you might never hear another celebrity say as long as time exists, I have enough. I’ve done enough. I am enough.”

This is gutting news for many reasons, of course. Carrey is a wonderful, constantly surprising actor, and it'd be a shame to never see him act again. There's also the matter of the Sonic Cinematic Universe that Paramount is clearly planning. With more Sonic movies and spinoffs on the horizon, how will they handle losing their Robotnik?

Sonic The Hedgehog 2's producers Neal Moritz and Toby Ascher confirmed to IGN that it would be impossible to replace Carrey, and that they "wouldn't even try".

Quite how we could have a Sonic Cinematic Universe without Robotnik remains to be seen, but the producers seem quietly confident that Carrey isn't totally finished with acting, despite his comments.

"Jim Carrey is always a member of the Sonic family and he will always have a place in these movies and TV shows as long as he'd like to be around. We love Jim and he's so special, and what he does with Robotnik is so incredible, we would love him as long as he would like to be there with us," Ascher said.

Moritz added: "I have a feeling that he loves Robotnik so much that I don't think he'll be able to walk away from that."
