'Skull & Bones' Resurfaces After Years Lost At Sea In Newly Leaked Footage

After years of delays, a new leaked video has given us a full rundown of what we can expect from Ubisoft's upcoming pirate adventure.

I’ll be honest, dear reader, it’s been that long since the announcement of this game, I’d frankly completely forgotten it was even happening. I’m sure depending on how much you like the idea of plundering booty (snort) and sailing the seven seas, you might have retained the memory of it a little better, but let’s refresh ourselves.

Skull & Bones is an upcoming pirate adventure from Ubisoft, which was first announced all the way back in 2017 during E3 (rest in piece), originally set to release the very next year. Yeah, that didn’t happen. As TechRadar writes, later, in September 2020, Ubisoft rocked up to let us know that the game is still alive, but was in development with “a new vision”, and later followed up saying that it’d be a “multiplayer first” title. Whether that’s the ‘new vision’ they were referring to isn’t actually known, but both the website and social media pages seemed to undergo a rebranding of sorts last month, complete with a swanky new colour scheme.

Take a look at the Skull & Bones gameplay trailer which was released during E3 2018.

So, it was already looking like there was some signs of life brewing from the depths, but a new leak seems to have cemented that further. As reported by VGC, a new leaked video has given us a full rundown of what we can expect when the game releases, whenever that may be.

Your goal, as an underdog, will apparently be to become the most infamous pirate, starting out with a small trading vessel, and eventually crafting bigger ships, all with their own unique playstyles. You’ll grow your ‘Infamy’ level (higher levels needed for those bigger boats, as you'd expect) by completing different activities, such as exploring, plundering, or taking on contracts from NPCs (which you can complete with two other players).

There’s still no fully official word on when Skull & Bones will actually be out - although in an earnings call back in February, Ubisoft’s chief financial officer Frédérick Duguet said that it’d be released some time during the fiscal year ending 31 March 2023, so it could be anytime in the next 11 months. We’ll have to stay tuned for when it inevitably bubbles to the surface.
