We are very much in the remake and remaster era for video games right now, as tools like Unreal Engine 5 make it considerably easier for developers to bring older games into the modern day with updated visuals and mechanics.

Oblivion Remastered is one of the better examples of that from the last year, marking a noticeable improvement on logging in to play the original in 2025. The complete HD-2D remake of Dragon Quest I & II is another great example of what can be achieved with very old games that many simply wouldn't have enjoyed the chance to play.

So whilst we always love to see new games hit the market, refreshing these older experiences is also a worthwhile thing for game developers to do.

With that in mind, we come to Sacred 2 Remaster, a refreshed version of the 2008 release Sacred 2: Fallen Angel, the second in the action RPG series and a prequel set more than 200 years before the first.

The remaster of Sacred 2 is now out and it promises to bring back the classic experience that many of us older heads will remember well, while at the same time updating the visuals and some of the game's mechanics.

If you've never played it before, Sacred 2's story is traditional fantasy fare. In the developer's own words, "Ancaria stands on the brink. T-Energy, the mysterious power source that once brought prosperity, now fuels corruption, conflict, and chaos. In the midst of war and betrayal, seven heroes rise — each with their own fate, abilities, and path through a living, breathing open world."

That latter part is a hint at the game's seven classes available for the player to choose from, almost none of which you'll recognise from more traditional RPGs.

At the start of the game, you get to choose whether to follow the path of Light or Dark, deciding the fate of the land in the process. The paths intersect at various points, so you can see the same missions from either side, depending on whether you're more interested on being evil.

The remaster itself includes all expansions and updates in one edition, as well as a modern UI and full controller support. Textures, lighting effects and draw distance have all been improved, and there are several community driven fixes that should improve the overall gameplay experience.

The game is available now on Steam as a bundle with Sacred 2 Gold.
