Resident Evil 2 director Hideki Kamiya has apparently had enough of the series’ scares.
Kamiya, who worked at Capcom between 1994 and 2006, was game director on Resident Evil 2, and also worked on the original Resident Evil and Resident Evil Zero. He’s also directed games like Devil May Cry, Bayonetta, and Ōkami.
With such legendary titles under his belt, Kamiya’s reputation doesn’t go unnoticed. Which is why his recent comments regarding the scare factor in Resident Evil Requiem have caught the attention of his fans.
A new video posted online shows Kamiya and other staff at his current studio, Clovers, playing through the opening chapters of Resident Evil Requiem. The short clip reveals that he’s had enough of the series being scary.

“I’ve been saying forever they should make a ‘non-scary’ mode,” Kamiya reveals, to which another employee says it would defeat the concept of the game.
“Look, I just want to enjoy the puzzles,” he admits. “The puzzles and the combat. I don’t need the scary stuff.”

Hideki Kamiya Is A Funny Bloke, Which Is Why I'm Sure He's Joking
Anyone aware of Kamiya’s whole shtick will find it hilarious. I mean, he became known on X (formerly Twitter) for blocking large numbers of users for various reasons, to the point where being blocked by Kamiya became an inside joke with fans.
Still, taking his comments at face value, it’s easy to see why a ‘non-scary mode’ for Resident Evil Requiem wouldn’t really work.
You’d have to cut out almost the entirety of the first half of the game, which is easily the best part. You’d be left with Leon’s sections, but at that point you may as well go play Resident Evil 4.
The video continues showing some of Kamiya’s further comments, poking fun at Leon’s age in the sequel.
“Leon’s no spring chicken anymore, is he?” he says, resulting in the room erupting in laughter. “Guess that goes for both of us. People who live in glass houses…”
It’s a cute video, and it’s great to see Kamiya still enjoys the Resident Evil series 30 years after working on the first one.
Still, I don't think Capcom is going to be honouring his request any time soon, if the amount of scares in Requiem is anything to go by.
