In 1996, Capcom’s Resident Evil redefined the survival horror genre but could the next entry be revolutionary?

When it comes to iconic video game franchises in the survival horror genre, it doesn't get much bigger than Capcom’s Resident Evil. Since its first release on the original PlayStation, it has garnered millions of fans across the world.

Don’t get me wrong, it’s not always been great for fans of the series with titles such as Resident Evil 6 being considered as a low point for the series. That being said, Resident Evil 6 at least has a banging Mercenaries mode.

In July 2024, Capcom announced that Resident Evil 9 is in the works, though it has to be said that its official title is yet to be confirmed. At this time, we know very little about the next game in the series other than what we’ve learned from certain rumours circulating the internet.

If those rumours are believed, Resident Evil 9 will feature both Leon S. Kennedy and Jill Valentine as playable characters, which would be a first for the video game series. Rumours also claim that it will be set on a creepy remote island.

Of course, until Capcom confirms any of those rumoured details, we should take all Resident Evil 9 gossip with a pinch of salt until confirmed otherwise.

As reported by Rely on Horror, industry gossip curator, Dusk Golem aka Aesthetic Gamer suggests that one of the main reasons why it’s taking so long for Resident Evil 9 to be released is that it’s going to revolutionise the series.

“It's like a big reinvention of the series, to the same level as RE4 and RE7,” they said on Twitter. “It's not going to play just like RE7/RE8 or the remakes, it's trying new things and very ambitious. It will almost definitely be revealed this year, so just hold tight.”

“Resident Evil 9 will be a text adventure,” jokes Redditor JaySouth84 with WolfhoundCid adding “RE9 will be a football game. Prove me wrong.”

“It's a rogue-lite deckbuilding kart racer now,” claimed shadesjackson. “Pachinko machine,” said aceless0n, likely referring to the Konami gambling machines.

As you may have already guessed, much of the thread is having a laugh and I’m hard-pressed to find a serious comment.

Oh, wait, here’s one! “I just want a bigger Resident Evil 2 remake,” replied Crazex12 with cravex12 adding “With a fully developed second scenario.”

“Just give us Resident Evil 7 with a different setting with similar gameplay and I’m sold,” said Tornado_Hunter24.

“They will be going back to fixed-camera and tank controls, just watch,” predicted Lucky_Louch.

Hopefully, Capcom will reveal all the official details in the coming months such as the Resident Evil 9 release accompanied by a glorious gameplay trailer. If that happens, we’ll be sure to update you straight away.
