Red Dead Redemption 3 Prequel Setting Practically Confirmed Years Ago

Would a Red Dead Redemption sequel even technically be a Western anymore?

The voice actor behind Red Dead Redemption’s John Marston may have already told us exactly what we can expect from Red Dead Redemption III, and it sounds perfect.

Back in 2023, Rob Wiethoff, who voiced John Marston in both Red Dead Redemption and Red Dead Redemption II, was asked about his thoughts on a potential third game in Rockstar Games’ cowboy shootin’ franchise.

During his interview with Sackchief, Wiethoff implied that he thinks it's more than likely a new Red Dead game would be a prequel.

"Because so many characters in Red Dead Redemption II were so well developed, you could go in so many different directions now”, Wiethoff replied.

“I guess the crazy thing about the time, is that they said... [Red Dead Redemption] was kind of the end of that wild west era, so if you went past that... it wouldn't be so much of a Western game anymore."

He also followed up by stating that a prequel focusing on Dutch, and his ability to get so many people on his side, could be interesting.

However, he also stated that both Sadie Adler and Charles Smith are still out there, following the events of Red Dead Redemption II. Either way, he specifically noted that he’d be interested in playing an old John Marston.

Over on the r/reddeadredemption subreddit, fans seem pretty happy with whichever one of Wiethoff’s ideas comes to pass.

“I just hope for another amazing game”, commented user MsDorisBeardsworth.

“When I first heard the main character for RDR2 was gonna be some "other" guy besides John, I was a little disappointed but then when I played Arthur, I fell in love like everyone else.”

“two things: 1) Dude is amazing 2) Red Dead 3 in some form is happening because you can tell he's recalling conversations and filtering what he can say”, replied user Sudden-Ad-1217.

“I'm all for it.”

Personally, I think Wiethoff is on the money when he said that a new game past the point of Red Dead Redemption’s conclusion would no longer be a Western, but I’d still be interested in seeing what that looks like.

Either way, much like the community, I trust in whatever direction Rockstar Games decides to take things.
