While many game developers have finally left the PlayStation 4 behind after a lengthy period of cross-platform releases, new reports indicate that the last-gen console is still set to get some new AAA releases in the near future.
Developers like Capcom, Atlus, and Square Enix are among the list of companies who have started supporting only the current-gen systems.
This comes ahead of the rumoured next-gen reveal next year, having left behind the PS4 and Xbox One systems in the pursuit of higher graphical fidelity and better performance.
However, reports suggest that the PlayStation 4 is going to be getting a major AAA release later this year, squashing hopes that developers will finally embrace the current generation.

As reported by insider @HeyImAlaix on X (formerly Twitter), Call of Duty 2026 is reportedly being tested on PlayStation 4.
Call of Duty 2026 is rumoured to be Modern Warfare 4, the follow-up to 2023’s Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3. Activision has not confirmed the title yet, though.
HeyImAlaix is known for sharing Call of Duty related info, so this new intel may be accurate. However, it’s also important to stress that this is still just a rumour at this point, and that we should also wait for confirmation from an official source.

It would make sense that Activision wants to continue supporting last-gen consoles, though.
For starters, there is a massive chunk of the PS4 installbase that has not yet upgraded to PS5, so if the next Call of Duty is able to run on hardware from 2013, it’d be leaving money on the table to not support those users.
This also correlates with the fact that Call of Duty: Black Ops 7 sold rather poorly in comparison to its predecessors. Although it was the fifth best-selling video game in the United States last year, that’s also the lowest a Call of Duty game has ranked since 2008. Sales were reportedly down by 50% of Black Ops 6’s.
The lower sales were reportedly due to the game’s availability on Xbox Game Pass, something that Microsoft has now backtracked with Day 1 releases, as well as poor reception to the game’s technical performance, design choices, and use of generative AI in development.
Meanwhile, other games coming out in 2026 that are set to release on last-gen consoles include Mina the Hollower, Deltarune: Chapter 5, and Ratatan.
The list of new games coming to last-gen systems is certainly slowing down, and it seems like we may finally be past the age of cross-gen releases being quite common.
This was a lot more common at the start of the generation, around 2020–2022, where games were frequently being released on both PS4 and PS5.
The main reason for this was the PS5 shortage at the start of the generation, where users struggled with securing a current-gen console due to a stock shortage that occurred during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Meanwhile, with the currently ongoing global RAM shortage, the PlayStation 6 and Xbox’s Project Helix may be set for similar stock issues, with hardware prices increasing by as much as five times the original price.
