Today’s finally the day - the fifth instalment in the Predator franchise (and prequel to all four existing movies), Prey, is out now.

The film is set 300 years in the past, in the Comanche nation, and follows the story of a skilled young warrior called Naru (Amber Midthunder). “The prey she stalks, and ultimately confronts, turns out to be a highly evolved alien predator with a technically advanced arsenal, resulting in a vicious and terrifying showdown between the two adversaries,” the movie’s synopsis reads.

Take a look at the trailer for Prey right here.

Anyway, Predator fans will be pleased to know that Prey has been a hit with critics, and has received a tonne of really positive reviews. Empire’s was full of praise for Amber Midthunder, describing her as “a ball of elemental fury” who fills Naru with “shatterproof resolve and ruthless pragmatism”. They concluded their review, saying: “Effortlessly the best Predator movie since the original, Prey proves that, against all expectation, there’s life in the franchise yet, not to mention a thrilling new lead in Amber Midthunder.”

IGN also said that Midthunder’s performance was a highlight, summing up their 8/10 review by saying: “Dan Trachtenberg’s Prey never lets up. It’s full of the Predator franchise’s trademark violence and tension, but it’s the ferocious, star-making turn from Amber Midthunder that stands as its greatest strength. The movie’s sole focus on her lead character, Naru, means that the supporting roster comes off a little wooden, but when Prey’s tracking the young warrior’s duel with the Predator - full of powerful imagery and creative kills - it rarely falters.”

Meanwhile, Digital Spy claim that Prey has revitalised the Predator franchise “by stripping it back to basics”, and added: “We'd hope that this doesn't prove to be our only outing in the 18th century for the Predator franchise. But if Prey is a one-and-done, then it's even better than Predator fans could have ever dreamed of.”

So, how about that? Prey is available to stream now on Disney+ in the UK, and Hulu in the US, and it sounds like fans are in for a great time.
