Finding its place somewhere between LA Noire and Vampire: The Masquerade - Bloodlines, this free Xbox Game Pass RPG is quickly making a name for itself.
Sometimes, it takes a subscription like Xbox Game Pass to really reignite a game, with players often dipping into the ever-expanding catalogue looking for their next thrill, either side of AAA releases.
Two years after being released, one $35 game has now become a freebie on Game Pass, and its kickstarted a revival with players being 'refreshed' with its vibe and punchy storyline.
The Thaumaturge is a turn-based, narrative-led RPG that breaks out of its confined box to wrap up an emotional campaign in a well-rounded story, and it's winning people over.
Having headlined other subscriptions like PlayStation Plus, The Thaumaturge combines mythical demon hunting with a clue-based, LA Noire-like, Sherlock-imitating investigative protagonist that has a knack for getting out of sticky situations.

With a unique take on turn-by-turn combat, it's a change of pace from what most people would think about an RPG.
Yet, in a time where some hectic and intense games are landing, The Thaumaturge manages to stay 'chill' and 'fun'.

The Game Pass lineup might be as strong as it ever has been with AAA releases becoming commonplace on the service, but it hasn't stopped this two-year-old title from popping up in players' download lists.
"This game took me by surprise and downloaded it as a while a wait for Forza 6… I don’t usually like turn-based games with a lot of speech… But I eat this raw," said one person posting on Reddit.
"I think I liked it, because it’s a laid-back game in a category that all too often becomes an extreme incarnation of the genre."
Another Redditor added, "I also played it as soon as it was added to Game Pass. Solid game. I loved the setting and the characters. The combat system is a bit weird, but I ended up liking it."
A third said, "The story was good, I think they did great with the world building, combat wasn’t bad but got annoying to me by the end, but the final boss was still cool, I think it’s cool how the game sort of encourages you to sacrifice tangible power for certain endings."
If searching around and finding clues is your style, LA Noire's rumoured reboot following GTA VI will likely whet your appetite.
But in the meantime, you won't find much harm in trying out this fun title.
