Pokémon TCG Pocket announces first major update

Ash of all trades

The Pokémon TCG Pocket team has just shared a rather exciting update on Twitter regarding the game’s future, as well as the upcoming inclusion of a feature fans have been begging the developers to include since launch.

The official @PokemonTCGP account shared this update last night, which they explained comes directly from the "Pokémon Trading Card Game Pocket Operations Team".

“Today we would like to announce new content planned to be released in a future major update…” they stated. “To begin with, we plan to add new booster packs by the end of the year. In addition, we are aiming to add a feature that allows certain cards to be traded starting in January, 2025.”

"Also, we have other new features in development outside of the trade feature introduced here. We plan to announce more details about the update as dates for the addition of these features are finalized, so please look forward to it."

Obviously the most exciting element of this announcement is the bit about the addition of the trading feature that will be dropping at the start of next year.

Although some have already dubbed the announcement to be “predatory” given that they specify only “certain cards” will be tradeable, I’m actually going to give the Pokémon TCG Pocket team the benefit of the doubt on this one.

Firstly, it would be way too easy to simply make a second account and then transfer all of the good cards you’ve unlocked over to your main one, so there had to be some restrictions in place here.

And secondly, the “certain cards” limitation might not actually end up being as bad as it sounds. Some cards, like for instance the full-art Mew, are limited to a single unlockable copy for a reason. The team could simply be specifying that cards like this are the ones that will end up limited.

Hopefully they announce more details regarding this, um, announcement down the line, at which point we’ll update you further.
