Team17 Digital has officially announced a new partnership with developer Observer Interactive for the release of Good Boy, one of the sweetest games I think I've seen in years.

If you're the kind of moviegoer who banks on Pixar movies breaking your heart and reducing you to tears, Good Boy will probably scratch that particularly masochistic itch.

Best described as a kind of blend between Pikmin and Wall-E, Good Boy is an "ecosystem driven metroidvania" in which you explore a strange planet with the help of a number of adorable robots.

The catch? Thanks to the magic of sci-fi, these rovers have been imbued with the personality and memories of dogs who have long-since passed away and left their fluffy moral bodies behind.

"Featuring characters based on real life pets of the developers, this game offers adventure for all and a story that blends Wall-E with wonderful memories of humans' best friend," reads the press release.

Good Boy offers a more relaxed take on the metroidvania genre, allowing you to use "a variety of tools and upgrades to capture the exotic creatures of Terra II. Harness their unique abilities to overcome obstacles and expand the world or bring them back to Homebase where they can be scanned for Research Credits. The living, breathing ecosystem of Terra II is at your disposal!"

The dogs-turned robots are scattered across the world, each with their own quests, stories, and memory tapes showing us their life before they were uploaded to a machine.

The press release continues: "Unlock Mysteries Delve deep into the hidden depths of Terra II! Explore sprawling caves and discover ancient temples, as you uncover the history of the planet and its previous inhabitants. Who were they? Where did they go?"

Good Boy looks like it really could be something special. There's no release date just yet, but you can wishlist it via Steam today and follow along on social media for more updates.
