Pokémon Odyssey 2 is a Stunning New Fantasy RPG

More Pokémon is always a good thing

Fan-made Pokémon projects have always been some of the best around and it's little surprise that Nintendo is so litigious about it because the final products really could be mistaken for Game Freak's own work.

One of the best examples in recent times was Pokémon Odyssey, a custom built game for the Game Boy Advance emulator that was based on the already excellent FireRed.

That in mind, the developers of the mod have just announced a sequel in Pokémon Odyssey 2: Heroes of Lemuria, which takes players to the titular kingdom, where they'll be given the chance to catch and battle over 250 reimagined Pokémon known as Etrian variants.

The big gameplay change is that you will start by picking from one of nine classes in Medic, Survivalist, Protector, Pugilist, Ninja, Gunner, Alchemist and Sovereign, with your choice affecting how the adventure plays out, as well as what rare items you find and which shinies are more likely to appear.

In addition, three starter Pokémon pairs were shown as part of the initial reveal - Machop & Meditite, Rowlet & Jigglypuff and Ralts & Elekid. Each comes with their own starting items and subclass, in what promises to be a much deeper experience than you'd traditionally expect from a Pokémon game.

The slightly bad news is that development has only been underway for a short time, but the team has a great track record of delivering builds quickly, so hopefully there should be something playable before long.

Underneath the developer's post announcing the game on Reddit, fans shared their delight at the team working on a new game so soon after finishing the first one,

"Insane. I finished Odyssey a couple of weeks ago and it surpassed unbound as the #1 rom hack of all time (my opinion) Hopefully this releases within the next 5 years," one said.

Another added, "Omg I literally cannot wait!! Y’all are amazing. Odyssey is my favourite Pokémon game of all time cannot wait for more."

"Holy peak 🙏 the class aspect seems super interesting, and what could be better than a sequel to one of the greatest hacks of all time? Hats off to u for real," a third agreed.

The development team hasn't put a timeline on the game or when we might see a test build, but that's probably a wise thing given the immense ambition of the project. Either way, we can't wait!
