Pokémon FireRed has a stunning Unreal Engine remake you definitely missed

Revisit an old classic

Is it a step too far to remake a remake?

Perhaps, but I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t curious to see what Pokémon FireRed and LeafGreen would look like if produced for the current console generation.

It was eight years after the original Red and Blue landed that FireRed and LeafGreen came to fruition, and they remain among my favorites in the Pokémon franchise.

Look, I just don’t think Bulbasaur, Squirtle, and Charmander as a starter line-up can be topped.

Maybe it’s the nostalgia talking, but they have my whole heart.

Well, sad to say, an official remake of these remakes isn’t on the cards as far as we’re aware.

One dedicated fan though is in the midst of recreating FireRed in Unreal Engine 4, and it’s a sight to behold.

Pokémon fans can next look forward to Pokémon Legends Z-A which is set to launch next year. Take a look at the game in action below.

Created by solo developer Felipe Gouvea, Pokémon The Legend of RED is a 3D remake of FireRed which has been made using Unreal Engine 4.

I have to say, I’m surprised this project hasn’t been nuked by The Pokémon Company or Nintendo.

That being said, many of the creator’s development diaries have been made private on YouTube, so perhaps that’s to protect the project from such a fate.

Lucky for you though, you can still download the files of The Legend of RED’s tech demo if you want to give this fan creation a whirl.

In the remake, Gouvea has introduced a real-time combat system, leaving behind the game’s turn-based mechanics.

Otherwise, it’s a pretty faithful remake.

It should go without saying that to download the tech demo, you’ll need to be using a PC but it’s cool that fans can actually give this a go for themselves.

So often, these kinds of remake projects only ever remain videos that we fawn over on YouTube.

This particular remake has been knocking about for some time and it doesn’t appear that there are any major updates, so I wouldn’t expect the project to grow beyond this demo.

Still, it’s well worth checking out if you want to revisit a classic in a new way.
