PlayStation 5 Controllers Aren't Charging In Rest Mode, But There's An Easy Fix

Players are finding that the PlayStation 5's controller, the DualSense, is not charging while in Rest Mode. Thankfully, we've got a fix for you, and it won't cost you a penny.

The DualSense is definitely the shining star of the PlayStation 5's power to immerse gamers in their virtual worlds in new and innovative ways. It's a lot chunkier than the DualShock 4, but this extra room is to hold the systems that enable players to feel what is going on in the game in their hands. Firstly, there's the haptic feedback (which is essentially a fancy word for rumbles). But, this isn't your garden variety chattering when something momentous happens, like an avalanche falling or a helicopter taking off.

The motors inside the DualSense are much more precise and accurate than the motors inside its predecessor. Mark explained what that really means in his Astro's Playroom review. "One level has rain and hail while a violent wind blows to highlight just what the excellent haptic feedback is capable of," he described. "Individual raindrops pulse out sporadically around the outer shell while gusts of wind ebb and flow giving you a perfect storm in the palm of your hand; it's truly next-level stuff."

It is exceptionally cool. The controller also has adaptive triggers, which attempt to replicate actions in the game. So, in Astro's Playroom, the little character eventually gets his claws on a bow and arrow, and a mini-gun. Squeezing the trigger creates the "resistance" you would feel pulling back on the bowstring, and the mini-gun makes the bumper jump with each shot. The novelty of these additions don't wear off, and it's amazing to think of what else could be achieved with this tech.

Using the haptic feedback and the adaptive triggers does drain the battery, expectedly. So, it's extra annoying to discover that your controller hasn't been charging while the console has been in Rest Mode, leaving you sitting on the sofa like a lemon. We do have a fix for you, if you've been struggling with this issue, and it's (fortunately) very simple.

Firstly, check whether the console is set up to charge peripherals while in Rest Mode. In the home menu, select "Settings", then "System", then "Power Saving", then select "Features Available in Rest Mode". Select "Supply Power to USB Ports" and tick "Always" or "3 Hours". This was a step in the early set up for the console, and would have been easy to skip over, so this might be enough to do away with your power woes.

If this isn't the case, our second suggestion is to charge the controller by plugging it into one of the USB ports on the back of the console. That might work for you. Sony has addressed that this is a growing problem, and has supplied its own troubleshooting guide. There are going to be a few hiccups, as the PlayStation 5 finds its feet out in the wild. However, Sony has been very quick to identify these issues, and hopefully there will be a patch that irons things out soon.
