Sony Have A Patent For An AI That Will Straight Up Play A Game For You

It will even look up hints and tips in guides on its own.

Sony has added one more patent to its list of odd inventions for the next generation of the PlayStation, and this is an "automated artificial intelligence control mode for playing specific tasks during gaming applications."

In other words, it would be a feature that observes the player for their preferred playstyle, learning about the way that they resolve certain situations in a game. For example, you might like using the bioelectric Venom skills to create spectacular and devastating combos in Marvel's Spider-Man: Miles Morales much more than keeping in Camouflage and accruing the bonuses from stealth. Personally speaking, I'd like to see an AI play Deathloop, the upcoming immersive sim shooter from Arkane. Everyone's got their own approach to Dishonored and to Prey, but it'd be interesting to see what would occur if you gave a machine the reins. If you're not acquainted with Deathloop, this trailer will do the job of introducing you to the exciting gameplay and colourful world.

Back to the patent. In collecting this data about the player, the AI would then be able to take over if they were finding a particular part of the game too difficult or didn't know where to go next for the next quest marker. "If the AI character has completed specific tasks, those tasks can be identified as being completed by the user with assistance from the AI playing controller," read the description for the invention, spotted by Segment Next. If the data it is using isn't sufficient for completing this given task, then it will take it upon itself to search the Internet for guides and fill in the gaps, thereby handing back control to the player without stuttering.

Nifty, isn't it? Alternatively, it suggests an instance where the player is playing a multiplayer co-op game with pals, and then this AI would take over for a few minutes while that person goes to the bathroom, or gets some snacks, or picks up a phone call. The game doesn't get interrupted and you can still snag that three-star rating in Overcooked. Everyone's a winner. As aforementioned, patents from Sony's engineers have been popping up all over the place, like this one which would let your mates mess about with your VR game while sitting on the sofa. Or, there's the tech that will allow you to turn a banana into a controller. Evidently, these additions are a long way off, but it's still intriguing to see what Sony's up to.
