Sony got the champers out in its recent report for the fiscal period of 2020, because it's seen record highs and record breakers alike across those twelve months. One of these is for the PlayStation 4, as it is now the console that has sold the highest number of video games in history, dethroning the PlayStation 2.

According to its document on the consolidated financial results for 2020, PlayStation as a brand surpassed its previous all-time high for revenue with $25.04 billion brought in by software and hardware.

This is the second time that Sony has eclipsed the $20 billion barrier in its history - the last time that happened was in 2018. Its fourth quarter was a significant contributor to the total, raking in $6.24 billion, which is yet another record statistic for the industry and incredibly impressive as it isn't even a holiday quarter.

We knew that the PlayStation 5 has sold extremely well, outstripping the PlayStation 4's sales and then some in the equivalent time frame. However, it's the PlayStation 4 that has sold the most games for its platform in history, boasting at least 1.577 billion sales across digital and physical forms. Of course, each to their own, but we've got a list of the 20 games that made the console a must have. How many have you played? Keep score with our video below.

As the year progresses, it looks like Sony will only go from strength to strength. In an interview with Nikkei, PlayStation CEO Jim Ryan stated that players will look forward to a large number of first- and third-party exclusives in the future.

"We have been quietly but steadily investing in high-quality games for PlayStation, and we will make sure that the PS5 generation will have more dedicated software than ever before," he explained. "We have repeatedly engaged in mergers and acquisitions, including Insomniac Games in the US. We will not rule out that option in the future."

Housemarque's sci-fi horror Returnal arrives on April 30th, Final Fantasy VII Remake Intergrade and Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart launches in June, and we've even got God of War 2 to watch out for this year.

All in all, it's looking to be a pretty promising year for the PlayStation 5... that is, if the semiconductor shortage is rectified and production resumes to pre-pandemic levels. Hey, I'm being realistic here.
