PlayStation 5 Sales Set Sony Record, Faster Production Expected In 2021

PlayStation 5 Sales Set Sony Record, Faster Production Expected In 2021

Shelf-stackingly good news

According to a new report - albeit one with a rumour disclaimer attached, which you'd also be wise to acknowledge - the PlayStation 5 has set a four-week sales record for its makers. Which is... I guess unexpected, what with stock levels being poor in the run up to Christmas? I guess? Who can really tell, anymore.

Anyway, said Push Square report claims, via another report on Digitimes - that Sony's PS5 shifted around 3.4 million units in its first four weeks on sale. That's a whole lot of consoles. Indeed, given it took the PlayStation 4 six weeks to sell 4.2 million units, it seems to be a figure that's tracking for a new record in comparison with its predecessor. And the 3.4 million in four weeks is already a record for Sony, based on the time period in question.

Which is all great, and everything - but if you're like me, and still unable to actually buy one of these consoles, you're probably more interested in knowing when there will be some PS5s on store shelves, to take home.

Well, Digitimes has some information on that, too. Again, this comes via Push Square, but the word is that Sony is looking to improve production of the PlayStation 5 through a new partnership with a Taiwanese semiconductor manufacturer, and the company now has the aim of selling between 16.8 to 18 million PS5s in 2021.

TL;DR: if you haven't been able to get a PS5 yet, Sony has been making moves to increase its output of the consoles, so hopefully anyone who wants one can get one, before long.
