PlayStation 5 Console Overheats In A Best Buy Display Kiosk

Too hot to handle.

A PlayStation 5 overheated after being put in a display kiosk in a Best Buy, it has emerged. In what can only be described as a clear warning to make sure your consoles are stored somewhere with proper ventilation, footage of the incident started doing the rounds on Twitter over the weekend, along with the error message we can expect to see if our own PS5s overheat.

To be very clear here, this is not an indication that PS5s overheat too easily or that we're headed for some Xbox 360-style Red Ring Of Death scandal. As you can see from the tweet below, the next-gen hardware simply looks to have been stored in a dumb place. We know Sony has put a lot of work into the console's cooling solutions, and if you're blocking those vents by shoving the PS5 in a tight kiosk? Obviously it's going to heat up quickly.

"if that's the enclosure then that's obviously why it's overheating," argued Kyrkis on Twitter. "It's literally a closed off box that barely bigger than it. How is it supposed to get cool air if the only air available is the hot air coming out of it?"

It's hard to argue with that point. One of the reasons the PS5 is such a hefty lad is because the fan inside the console is an absolute unit. There's obviously a lot going on in the guts of the next-gen hardware, and Sony wanted to make sure things stayed cool and quiet during even the most demanding of games. In fact, engineer Yasuhiro Otori revealed in a recent interview that "various games will be released in the future, and data on the APU's behavior in each game will be collected. We have a plan to optimize the fan control based on this data."

With this in mind, it's incredibly important to remember to store your PS5 somewhere where it'll get the cool air it needs. I can't imagine you had your own tiny glass kiosk set aside to trap it in, but I'd also probably advise against leaving it in a sealed entertainment unit or TV cabinet if you can help it. The PS5 launches in the UK on November 19th, so you've not gone long left to make your plans.
