Well, there it is. After months of rumours and speculation, Sony has finally confirmed the first details of its overhauled PlayStation Plus subscription service.

As per the reports, all-new PlayStation Plus (previously codenamed Spartacus) is a multi-tiered service with different perks based on how much you’re willing to fork out each month. Higher tiers include things like free trials for first-party games (similar to EA Play) and access to the PlayStation Now library, with Sony’s other subscription service being absorbed into PlayStation Plus as part of the overhaul.

All-new PlayStation Plus launches in June with three flexible membership options.

"Today, we are pleased to share with you official news about changes coming to our subscription services. This June, we’re bringing together PlayStation Plus and PlayStation Now in an all-new PlayStation Plus subscription service that provides more choice to customers across three membership tiers globally," PlayStation writes in a blog post.

PlayStation Plus is made up of three tiers: Essential (£7), Extra (£11) and Premium (£13.49).

The headlines before we dive in: Premium offers free trials for first-party games, access to classic titles, and the ability to play most of the games currently available via the PlayStation Now library. Extra is essentially PlayStation Plus as we know it with PlayStation Now baked in, and Essential is your regular PS Plus: monthly free games, access to online play and discounts, etc.

Essential subscribers will, as mentioned, carry on enjoying the PS Plus benefits they've come to expect, with no change in pricing. However, if you want to upgrade to the next tier, Extra, you'll get all the usual benefits plus "up to 400 of the most enjoyable PS4 and PS5 games". These are a mix of first and third party games, all downloadable at any time.

Premium is perhaps the most exciting tier, offering all of the benefits that you'd get with Essential and Extra while also throwing in 340 additional games from the "original PlayStation, PS2 and PSP generations." These classic titles will be available via cloud streaming on PS4, PS5, or PC.

"The new Extra and Premium tiers represent a major evolution for PlayStation Plus. With these tiers, our key focus is to ensure that the hundreds of games we offer will include the best quality content that sets us apart. At launch, we plan to include titles such as Death Stranding, God of War, Marvel’s Spider-Man, Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales, Mortal Kombat 11, and Returnal," Sony writes.

"We’re working closely with our imaginative developers from PlayStation Studios and third-party partners to include some of the best gaming experiences available with a library that will be regularly refreshed. More details to come on the games we’ll have on our new PlayStation Plus service."
